Workplace Lifestyle Intervention Program Improves Health, Reduces Diabetes and Heart Disease Risks

Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania (PRWEB) March 06, 2015

A healthy lifestyle intervention program administered at the workplace and developed by the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health significantly reduces risk factors for diabetes and heart disease, according to a study reported in the March issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

The program was well-received by participants at Bayer Corp., who lost weight and increased the amount of physical activity they got each day, when compared with a control group in the study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

“Health care expenditures associated with diabetes are spiraling, causing widespread concern, particularly for employers who worry about employee health and productivity,” said lead author M. Kaye Kramer, Dr.P.H., assistant professor in Pitt Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology and director of the school’s Diabetes Prevention Support Center. “This leads to an interest in workplace health promotion; however, there are very few evidence-based programs that actually demonstrate improvement in employee health. This study found that our program not only improves health, but also that employees really like it.”

This demonstration program is based on the U.S. Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a national study that found people at risk for diabetes who lost a modest amount of weight through diet and exercise sharply reduced their chances of developing diabetes, outperforming people who took a diabetes drug instead.

Dr. Kramer and colleagues built on the DPP to create a group-based program that puts the findings into practice, called Group Lifestyle Balance™. The program is divided into 22 sessions over a one-year period and aimed at helping people make lifestyle changes to improve health. The sessions can be done as a group with a lifestyle coach or through a DVD coupled with brief weekly phone or, in certain cases, email consultations with the lifestyle coach. The option of the DVD with lifestyle coach support not only served as the main intervention option for those employees who traveled or who did not want to participate in the program in a group venue but also offered a valuable replacement for employees who chose to participate via group setting but had to miss an occasional session.

“Our Group Lifestyle Balance program has proven successful in diverse community settings, so we adapted it for the workplace since we found that there was a real need for effective programs that could fit into people’s work lives,” said senior author Andrea Kriska, Ph.D., professor in Pitt Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology and principal investigator of the study. “This current effort in the worksite shows clearly that a proven healthy lifestyle program, like the Group Lifestyle Balance program, offered to people where they work is not only feasible but effective in reducing risk factors for diabetes and heart disease for participating employees.”

A total of 89 employees at Bayer Corp. in Robinson Township, Pa., who were at risk for diabetes or heart disease were enrolled in the demonstration program in the fall of 2010 and followed for 18 months.

Over the course of a year, participants lost an average of 5 percent of their body weight (10 pounds), shrunk their waistlines by about 2 inches and brought down the levels of fat and sugar in their blood – all measures that reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. They also increased their physical activity by almost twofold.

Of the participants, 96 percent said they felt it was beneficial to offer the program at the worksite, and 99 percent said they would recommend it to their co-workers.

“The positive results that employees experienced from this lifestyle program speak to the benefits of personalized health programs in the workplace,” said Phil Franklin, M.D., U.S. corporate medical director, Bayer Corp. “I would like to congratulate the University of Pittsburgh researchers on the study.”

Additional authors on this research are Donald Molenaar, M.D., Veterans Health Administration in Minneapolis; Elizabeth Venditti, Ph.D., Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC; and Vincent C. Arena, Ph.D., Rebecca Meehan, M.S., R.D., L.D.N., Rachel Miller, M.S., Karl Vanderwood, Ph.D., and Yvonne Eaglehouse, M.S., M.P.H., all of Pitt Public Health.

This research was funded by the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (R18 DK081323–04).

New ACL Preservation at G2 Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

Richmond, Virginia (PRWEB) February 20, 2015

ACL tears are a common knee injury that can cause pain and instability, with over 200,000 cases annually in the United States. Orthopedic surgeon and knee and shoulder specialist Dr. Vic Goradia, is providing evolutionary treatments for patients at G2 Orthopedics and Sports Medicine with a new, less invasive tissue sparing ACL Preservation procedure – and OrthoBiologics are often a key component used to further improve the healing process.

For the past 30 years, surgeons have been treating ACL tears with what is known as an ACL reconstruction. During an ACL reconstruction, the surgeon completely removes the damaged ACL tissue from the knee, drills tunnels through the bone and inserts a graft. But with ACL Preservation surgery, if the ACL tears away from the bone, it is re-attached arthroscopically and injected with either PRP or Stem Cells- both of which come from the patient. ACL Preservation allows you to “preserve” your ACL tissue with a goal of faster recovery times, less pain, and ultimately providing a more natural feeling in your knee.

Less invasive orthopedic treatments, a focus on preservation, and the adoption of OrthoBiologics in the healing process is changing how orthopedics are delivered, and it parallels the evolution of Dr. Goradia’s own practice.

Orthobiologics support or enhance the body’s own natural ability to heal itself and can play an important role in treating acl, rotator cuff, meniscal, and cartilage injuries along with a variety of other common orthopedic conditions (arthritis, sprains, strains, tendonitis and inflammation) with outcomes that provide a continued quality of life. When surgery is needed, the evolution of arthroscopic techniques, modern imaging and the technical precision of modern surgical techniques have dramatically improved outcomes in orthopedics.

According to Dr. Goradia, “OrthoBiologics is likely to be the greatest orthopedic advancement in the 21st century, as it will allow us to promote and stimulate the body to heal itself – sometimes without surgery. The research in this field is very active and what we are doing today will change over time. This is why it is so important for me as a clinician to stay involved in the field on both a regional and national level where I have access to the latest information.”

Two examples of the importance of staying current are ACL Preservation Surgery and Biocartilage, which were hardly known just 1-2 years ago. Today, Dr. Goradia is able to perform a much less invasive procedure for many acl tears and a more effective procedure for cartilage loss.

Continued advancements in the integration of OrthoBiologics with traditional procedures suggest an exciting future for the treatment abilities of orthopedic medicine and surgery.

Dr. Vipool K. “Vic” Goradia is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Sports Medicine. He specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement. Dr. Goradia has given over 100 national presentations, regularly teaches advanced arthroscopic and related surgeries to other surgeons across the U.S. and beyond and has received several national awards for his research.

Riverside Callao Medical Arts Welcomes New Physician to the Team

Callao, Va. (PRWEB) May 11, 2013

Riverside Callao Medical Arts near Tappahannock, Va. will welcome Lisa Jenkins Haynie, MD, to the practice this summer as it celebrates the career of service of Michael Chatterson, MD, who will retire this year, after 15 years of practice.

“I will keep working in medicine, but not as hard,” said Dr. Chatterson, who is heading to Canada to be closer to family. “I still love the job. Because people are all different, medicine is never boring. Doctors and nurses are fortunate to be lifelong learners.”

Dr. Chatterson started practicing medicine in 1974, working in Ontario before heading to Virginia 15 years ago.

“Medicine has changed greatly with the introduction of many great new drugs, out-patient surgeries, and the introduction of Ultrasound, CAT scanning and MRI’s over the last 40 years,” Dr. Chatterson said. “I most enjoy the challenge of diagnosing and treating people with medical and psychiatric problems. I still keep seeing and hearing new stories from people.”

Dr. Haynie will start at Callao Medical Arts on July 1 and, Dr. Chatterson added, she will make “an excellent addition as an experienced physician.”

Not only has Dr. Haynie practiced medicine in the Northern Neck-Middle Peninsula of Virginia for 14 years, but she was also born and raised in nearby Westmoreland County.

“I truly feel blessed,” Dr. Haynie said. “Not many people are given the opportunity to leave their community and return to a job that will not only sustain them, but also give back to the community where you were raised.”

Dr. Haynie is board certified in family medicine. She graduated from Washington and Lee High School in Montross and majored in biology at Spelman College in Atlanta.

Her father, Clarence Jenkins, fostered her love of biology as a science teacher. Her mother, Frances, an elementary school principal, inspired her to learn more.

Combined, they set an example, Dr. Haynie said, to want to give back to the community. Clarence volunteered for the Westmoreland County Volunteer Rescue Squad and Frances served on the Westmoreland County School Board after retiring from the local school system.

While in medical school at Morehouse School of Medicine in Georgia, Dr. Haynie was a National Health Service Corps Scholar.

Dr. Haynie completed her family medicine residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Ghent Family Practice and received the Isadore Marman Award, which is given to the outstanding family medicine resident in the graduating class.

Because Haynie was a National Health Service Corps Scholar, she committed to work in a medically underserved area. In September 1999, she joined Westmoreland Medical Center in Montross not only because it is one of 14 community health centers owned by Central Virginia Health Services, Inc., but also because she wanted to provide medical care to residents of her hometown.

“If it weren’t for my parents instilling that sense of pride in your hometown I don’t know if I would have come back,” she said.

In July 2004, she became the medical center’s site director, overseeing daily activities of the medical facility.

Dr. Haynie and her husband, P.J. Haynie, have three children and live on their family farm in Reedville where P.J. is a fifth generation grain farmer.

No matter where she treats patients, the goal is to keep people healthy, Dr. Haynie said. At Callao Medical Arts she will continue to focus on keeping patients healthy, informed and, hopefully, inspired to give back to the community.

Insurance Companies Quoting Multi-Car Discounts for 2015 Added to Insurer Database Online

Jacksonville, FL (PRWEB) February 20, 2015

Savings through some insurance companies can be achieved by motorists when more than one vehicle is insured in the U.S. The Quotes Pros company is now promoting insurance companies that are quoting multi-car discounts for 2015 through its refined search portal at http://quotespros.com/auto-insurance.html.

A broad list of the top nationwide companies that supply multi-vehicle discounts can now be explored using the QuotesPros.com portal for this year. The agencies that are showcased directly to researchers of insurance companies do provide optional coverage that can be priced separately.

“Saving money by insuring more than one vehicle is a new way for adults to reduce coverage expenses on a annual or monthly basis through qualified companies,” said one Quotes Pros company rep.

The agencies that are now categorized inside of the search portal offer selectable insurance coverage based on a zip code. Because theft statistics and city population are examined by most companies, this data can now be obtained partially through zip codes across the country.

“Our system removes the need to begin calling agencies offline to review rates plans or types of coverage,” the rep included.

The Quotes Pros company has made revisions to its provider list to help motorists explore new discounts for the remainder of the year. In addition to the auto coverage plans, health and life insurance costs from direct providers can now be explored easier through the tool at http://quotespros.com/life-insurance.html.

About QuotesPros.com

The QuotesPros.com company provides use of its portal to average American motorists who are reviewing lists of insurers on the web. The company helps car owners to explore policy types available as well as the prices attached to each plan. The QuotesPros.com company has completed its national expansion this year that allows further research for policies that are not related to auto coverage in the U.S.

A Spoonful of Spirituality and a Dash of Diligence

Cincinnati, Ohio (PRWEB) January 26, 2015

The cookbook tucked away in the corner of a well-supplied kitchen contains a variety of choices to make the perfect meal. Life, as Edward Anderson knows, does not have such a guide.

In a world filled with choices that affect possibilities beyond our understanding, Anderson offers a glimmer of hope and guidance. “Recipes to Drive Your Life,” offers a detailed look at structured lessons learned by Anderson as a way to guide others on a path to success and happiness.

“In the book are recipes and tools to focus on the problems without attacking anyone involved, but instead working collaboratively to move forward and make progress,” said Anderson.

After spending 10 years with the Civil Engineer Corp of the Navy and 37 years with Procter and Gamble, Anderson wrote the book as a resource for his children and grandchildren. A sincere desire to share his message and help others led him to publish, “Recipes to Drive Your Life.”

“You get to use the recipes that you want and need at the time that you need them. Building your knowledge, skills, and capacity to succeed and be happy takes time and needs a good process that works for you,” said Anderson.

Atlanta Plastic Surgeon Dr. Brian Maloney Now Uses Juvederm Voluma

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 03, 2015

Thanks to Dr. Maloney’s new non-surgical chin implant, patients can balance their profile by augmenting a weak chin without the lengthy recovery time and the pain and risks associated with surgical chin implants.

Chin position carries with it significant attributes. A chin slightly short in length or a receding jaw can age a person, or make him or her appear weak and frail. A strong chin, associated with beautiful aesthetic standards, can make a strong and vibrant impression. By using Voluma® injections, Dr. Maloney can produce a positive result for those who want to enhance their chin area, without the permanence of surgery.

A national trainer for Allergan, the company that manufactures Botox Cosmetic®, Juvederm® and Latisse,® Dr. Maloney was one of the first physicians to be certified to use Juvederm Voluma®, the company’s newest hyaluronic acid filler. He was instrumental in developing the Voluma® injection protocol and travels extensively instructing other cosmetic doctors on injection techniques. Voluma® is FDA-approved to provide volume to the mid face and has proprietary properties that make it able to lift tissues more effectively while lasting up to two years.

The non-surgical chin implant has become a very popular, in demand procedure for its non-permanent approach, which enables a patient to try out a stronger chin before deciding if he or she desires a more permanent, surgical outcome. It also is an attractive procedure for those who don’t have the time or money available for chin implant surgery. Another advantage of the non-surgical chin implant is that the client has a total control of how much correction she/he wants by observing the procedure with a hand held mirror and giving his or her feedback to Dr. Maloney.

Dr. Maloney performs non-surgical chin implants with Voluma® injections in just one to two office visits. Generally, there is no bruising, and the patient can resume normal activities immediately.

According to Dr. Maloney, good candidates for this procedure include those who have mild to moderate loose skin in the chin or jowl areas, and those who are not good surgical candidates. Dr. Maloney uses his expertise and computer imaging during consultation to determine if this new, minimally invasive combination is the correct “fit” for his patients’ goals. For more information, or to book a consultation, please call The Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery at 770.804.0007.
